I thought it was time to overhaul the look of the Big Monster Love site as it looked kind of grim and I'm not really that grim a person. So, just in time for March 17th I've made it green looking. Thanks to Peter for the illustration in the top right hand side. The navigation has been tinkered with a wee bit and there are more MP3s available.

Thanks to ABBA I can finally score: On misheard lyrics and the American military/industrial complex circa 1960s.

I had a fan (yes believe it or not i have a fan!) quote his favourite lyric of mine to me recently "Thanks to ABBA I can finally score". It's a great lyric but unfortunately I didn't write it. The line is "Thanks to ARPA I can finally score". So what is ARPA? ARPA stands for Advanced Research Projects Agency which was an agency of the US Department of Defence. This agency (latterly redubbed DARPA with the addition of Defence to the title) specialises in research and development of military applications. Back in the 1960s while others enjoyed The Beatles, marajuana, Cliff Richard, the pill, and the escalating Viet Nam War, ARPA was providing funding and logistics for the establishment of ARPAnet. This telecommunications network, that linked computers at various facilities across the United States was the precursor of the internet. It was designed so that if any node in the network was attacked and destroyed the network itself would survive.
